Every year there seems to be an increase in allergens and respiratory problems, which may be why the room air cleaner has suddenly become a popular and accepted appliance. Claiming to filter dust and fine particles out of the air through all different types of filtration methods, portable air cleaner units are unusally bulky and cumbersome. Even worse, they draw vast quantities of raw electric power, sometimes even as much as an entire refrigerator.

Because of this, Energy Star efficiency guidelines for room air cleaners are fairly strict. To bear the blue energy star logo, air filtration units must use at least 35% less energy than comparable models of the same type. These energy-efficient air cleaners can save $20 to $30 per year in utility costs, depending upon how often the unit is used and how long it is kept running.

Air purifiers are said to reduce the amount of irritants, pollen, and dust particles floating in the home environment. This can be done through the basic filtration process used by air cleaners, or by air purifying units utilizing charcoal filtration and other techniques to eliminate pollutants as well. Even more complicated, ionic systems are sold that claim to attract dust and floating particles to their charged plates, rather than use fans to blow air around. In the case of all these products, removable filters often need to be replaced regularly and semi-regular maintenance is required for most air cleaners.

It's important to note here that Energy Star does not endorse air cleaners or purifiers as far as claims of cleaner, healthier air are concerned. Therefore, Energy Star measures only the clean air delivery rate (CADR), which is basically the output of 'cleaned air', against the amount of energy the unit uses to deliver that air. Efficiency is gauged on an electricity used vs. output type basis only. The United States Environmental Protection Agency can make no recommendations or endorsements measuring air cleanlines, purification, or filtration.

Features of an Energy Efficient Air Cleaner and Purifier

Because the home air cleaner is a fairly complex device, there are many ways for it to operate inefficiently. Models earning the Energy Star seal use less energy as a whole, but most also have LED clocks or timers that allow the model to shut down during certain times of the day while still plugged in. Some air purifiers have sensors that detect pollution levels and adjust fan speed according to needs, and some even have light sensors that switch them to 'silent mode' or turn themselves off during nighttime hours.

HEPA filters and other filtration devices cleaning the air must also be cleaned or replaced regularly. Units offering easy access to these filters or panels generally get better maintenance and therefore run more efficiently. Air cleaners with hard-to-replace internal screens or without filter replacement indicators can eventually run rough or loud. Lack of maintenance to these models can even make the air worse that it was to begin with.

It's wise to check the Department of Energy's yellow Energy Guide label whenever considering a major appliance. At the bottom of each label, the estimated annual cost in electricity will be displayed for comparison against other models. If this label also bears the blue Energy Star logo, that air cleaner has met the EPA's energy-saving standards, and is even further efficient. The science of home air filtration is a relatively new science, with many different variables and many ways to measure them. As technology advances and techniques for cleaning air get sharper, there will be better guidelines for cleanliness against which to compare each unit. For now however, when choosing a portable air cleaner pay close attention to the specific purposes of each unit. Determine whether or not it meets your individual air purification needs, whether it be allegens, pet dander, dust mites, pollen, or any other airbore particles.

Finally, keep in mind that saving energy helps reduce pollution. Any room air cleaner meeting the Energy Star program's requirements will consume less wattage than other air purifiers or electronic filters, which in turn helps prevent global warming and promotes a green environment.
