In both cases, the same loop both sends and returns the liquid to and from the ground time and time again, drawing free clean energy with totally no impact upon the environment.

This type of unit is designed for any type of heating or cooling system using forced hot air to circulate throughout the home. In a water to air geothermal heat pump, the source of heat is extracted from the water. This is then used to produce both heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. A dual-purpose unit such as this one makes the best choice for home or building owners looking to convert maximium savings from their geothermal system.

 Water to Water Geothermal Pumps

Hot water heating and radiator-type applications will make use of a water to water geothermal heat pump. Baseboard and cast iron radiators would utilize this type of system, as well as any type of hydronic underfloor radiant heat. A water to water geothermal system would be unable to provide air conditioning, and would therefore be better suited to colder climes.

 Hybrid Water & Air Geothermal Pumps

Geothermal hybrid systems are sold that are capable of both producing water and forced hot air at the same time. Many times these geothermal heat pumps are commercial units, but as the popularity of underfloor radiant heating increases, residential hybrid models have been designed for homes utilizing both types of heating and cooling systems.

Geothermal products have come a long way, and several popular manufacturers now produce Energy Star rated heat pumps. Most models will bear the Department of Energy yellow Energy Guide label, and this will include important statistics on energy usage including annual estimated costs for each heat pump. Remember however, that only those with the blue Energy Star logo meet the EPA's guidelines for the Energy Star program.
